Sarapiquí is one of the largest towns in Costa Rica. Is a popular tourist destination for adventurers who enjoy touring the Rio Sarapiquí by raft. This region is well known for its natural wildlife reserves.
It is a great place to enjoy the surprising natural beauty of this country. Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, is its main city and is perfect for those who enjoy the outdoors walking, riding, watching the birds, rafting or kayaking. Nearby there are banana plantations that can be explored or visit the butterfly gardens. A great way to spend the day is taking a raft tour through the Sarapiquí River.

3 kilometers from Sarapiquí is La Selva Protected Area, a neotropical biological research station. It was created and operated by the Organization of Tropical Studies and offers tourists and nature lovers a unique opportunity to learn and enjoy this incredible ecosystem. It is currently a major research center in the world.
In order to conserve and manage the hydrological and ecological potential that surrounds the Braulio Carrillo National Parks, Poas Volcano, Irazu Volcano and Turrialba Volcano, the Central Volcanic Mountain Range Forest Reserve was created. Together with Braulio Carrillo National Park, it is the main recharge area that provides water to the Central Valley. This is a forest, so to access it can be done through the parks.
As previously mentioned, Braulio Carrillo National Park is one of the most extensive in the country and a key protector of the ecology of the area.
Next you will find the Rio Macho Forest Reserve, the Cacho Negro Volcano, the city of Varablanca, near the Poás Volcano and the Barva Volcano.
Barva Volcano is the highest point in the Braulio Carrillo National Park. As it is an inactive volcano, it is considered a mountain, which counts on many lagoons created by the streams and rivers that flow in the craters caused by the previous eruptions.
